! Through extensive research, I’ve developed my own approach to compare and integrate Numerology and several other esoteric systems with the main focus of uncovering BALANCE at various intricate levels. Because this exploration spans numerous traditions, I’ll be sharing my discoveries in a series of articles. It’s important to understand that these insights are the direct outcome of my own research, not necessarily widely accepted public opinion. Your interest and feedback would be incredibly valuable in making this ongoing work even more comprehensive. !
Letters in The Alphabet & Their Numerical Values
Regarding origin, Chaldean Numerology has its origin in Ancient Babylonian/Chaldean mystical tradition (rooted in Mesopotamian metaphysics), while Pythagorean Numerology grew with Greek tradition and is attributed to Pythagoras (with the popular modern version systemized in the 20th century).
Regarding numbers, Both Western/ Pythagorean Numerology and Chaldean Numerology systems deal mostly with single-digit numbers: Western Numerology deals with values from 1 through 9, whilst Chaldean Numerology only uses number from 1 to 8 to assign to letters, number 9 is considered sacred and could only be found as a name total, not being included in the letter-to-number chart. There are also some two-digit numbers that are used since they are supposed to have special meanings.
Only basic mathematical calculations are necessary to find your personal numbers based on your name and date of birth. Each letter in the alphabet, however, could be assigned with a different value depending on the system we use.
The following shows the letters and their numerical values in the two concerning systems:
| Letter | Western Value | Chaldean Value | Letter | Western Value | Chaldean Value |
| A | 1 | 1 | N | 14/5 | 5 |
| B | 2 | 2 | O | 15/6 | 7 |
| C | 3 | 3 | P | 16/7 | 8 |
| D | 4 | 4 | Q | 17/8 | 1 |
| E | 5 | 5 | R | 18/9 | 2 |
| F | 6 | 8 | S | 19/1 | 3 |
| G | 7 | 3 | T | 20/2 | 4 |
| H | 8 | 5 | U | 21/3 | 6 |
| I | 9 | 1 | V | 22/4 | 6 |
| J | 10/1 | 1 | W | 23/5 | 6 |
| K | 11/2 | 2 | X | 24/6 | 5 |
| L | 12/3 | 3 | Y | 25/7 | 1 |
| M | 13/4 | 4 | Z | 26/8 | 7 |
According to Heather A. Lagan, the author of the book Chaldean Numerology for Beginners, the decisive point that cause such a difference in the two systems is that while the Pythagorean system is based on the sequential patterns of the alphabet, the Chaldean system is based on sound vibrations.
The Chaldeans were renowned in the ancient world as astrologers, priests, and scholars and Chaldean Numerology is attributed by some groups of people to ancient Chaldean wisdom, with the modern form still having uncertain historical roots. In the Chaldean tradition, each number is believed to carry a specific vibrational energy that influences a person’s name, life path, destiny, and events: “Chaldean numerology allows letter energies und number vibrations to be ‘read’”, and each letter in a name “holds a meaning and a history, and letter placements and number frequencies reveal characteristics, patterns, strengths, weaknesses, pathways, spiritual connections, and challenges.” (Heather A. Lagan)
Since Chaldean numerology considers energies of both numbers and letters, they undoubtedly do assign each letter a unique character, but this topic will not be covered in details in my writing here, for it does not serve much my purpose of comparing the two systems.
Comparing Western/Pythagorean and Chaldean Numerologies through Examples
The comparisons I make in this part are applied for the book Numerology – The Key to Your Inner Self by Hans Decoz with Tom Monte and Chaldean Numerology by Heather A. Lagan.
Both above books introduce different indicators and how to calculate them, as well as provide us with their meanings in details. However, for the sake of simplicity, and also for the further analysis I will propose in later articles, I will compare only some main indicators that both numerological systems have, namely: Day of Birth, Lifepath Number (based on Birth Date), and Total Name Number in Chaldean Numerology or Expression Number in Numerology – The Key to Your Inner Self (based on Full Name).
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – Born on January 27, 1756
Day of Birth (DoB)
According to Chaldean Numerology, Day of Birth “is almost like your main sub number for your Lifepath, but its message is more personal, more intimate … If your day of birth falls in the 1 to 9 scale, those energies are fairly straightforward … If, however, your day of birth holds two digits … first, look at the initial number … Then look at the second number for its connections. And finally, look at the number that both reduce to.”
The following table shows how the two system analyse Mozart’s Day of Birth:
| Western Numerology | Chaldean Numerology | |
| DoB Calculation | 27 | 27 -> 2+7 = 9 |
| Meaning | “You are a born leader and an efficient manager, capable of organizing in inspiring others … You are highly creative, and you have an excellent understanding of people … You tend to be a late bloomer … you have a great dream for humanity … You are able to express your feelings well, though a bit dramatically at times … Your challenge is to learn acceptance and forgiveness. There is an element of sacrifice in your life …” | 2: “Pairs and Duality”: “… compromise … is the one of the challenges for the number 2 … the 2 … is generally known for its ability to see both sides of an issue, is a peaceful and generous energy and seeks romance, domesticity, and is not forceful or domineering …” 7: “Brain – Logic vs. Spirit”: 7 “is the protected number of the occult (that which is not seen and needs to be investigated in order to be understood) and holds incredible power and potential … This energy can also find it very difficult to disassociate itself from the past … it will only come into its true potential once the mind opens wide enough to allow the entry of spiritual and metaphysical data …” 9: “Endings and Beginnings”: “The 9 is considered sacred, as it is the highest level of spiritual awareness attainable before reaching Master Numbers and is the end one set of lessons and the beginning of another. These rare people seem to understand this cycle and in the process of both releasing and anticipating …” |
Lifepath Number
| Western Numerology | Chaldean Numerology | |
| Definition | “The Life Path number gives us a broad outline of the opportunities, challenges, and lessons we will encounter in this lifetime.” | “Lifepath Numbers tell you what you are here to learn, to become, to do.” |
| How to calculate | Month of birth + Day of birth + Year of birth | Month of birth + Day of birth |
| Details | Month: 1 Day: 27 -> 2+7 = 9 Year: 1756 -> 1+7+5+6 = 19 -> 1+9 = 10 -> 1+0 = 1 | Month: 1 Day: 27 |
| Lifepath Number | 1+9+1 = 11 (Master Number) | 1+27 = 28 -> 2+8 = 10 |
| Some quoted meanings | “You have the potential to be a source of inspiration and illumination for people. You possess an inordinate amount of energy and intuition … You are a channel for information between the higher and the lower, between the realm of the archetype and the relative world … amounts to a great capacity of invention … You possess great abilities, but indulge in much self-reflection and self-criticism … ” | “The turning point”: “This indicates a returning to the beginning, but in a different way, on a different level … 10 indicates that at some point in the holder’s life, they will undergo a transformation or rebirth, and will often have the ability to create or do something unique that will become noticed by others and may well serve to assist humanity on either a large or small scale … ” |
Expression Number or Total Name Number
Expression Number or Total Name Number are both calculated based on the full name at birth.
According to Pythagorean Numerology, “your Expression number reveals your physical and mental constitution, the orientation or goal of your life … it represents a lifelong target at which you are aiming … the Expression number reveals your inner goal, the person you aim to be … also reveals your talents, abilities, characteristics, and shortcomings …”
Chaldean also shares a quite similar belief regarding the grand total of all of your names combined, including first, middle, and last names: Total Name Number “will offer insights into the potentialities your energy carried upon entering this Earth plane … it is indicative of what you could achieve in your life.” The sub number, or the first total of all numerical values before being reduced to a one-digit Total Name Number “can point to what needs to be achieved, overcome, accepted, or honoured before we can tune in to the Universal wavelength of our Total Name Number …”
According to Pythagorean Numerology:
W O L F G A N G
5 6 3 6 7 1 5 7 Total: 40 -> 4
A M A D E U S
1 4 1 4 5 3 1 Total: 19 -> 10 -> 1
M O Z A R T
4 6 8 1 9 2 Total: 30 -> 3
So, Mozart’s full name at birth totals 4+1+3 = 8. Since 8 is a one-digit number, it’s also his Expression Number. Some special features of the Expression Number 8 include (but not limited to):
- Having power and potential to achieve great things.
- Being a realist and a visionary planner.
- Possessing leadership ability and a strong drive to achieve and be recognized.
- Having the capability of manifesting abundance through structured effort.
According to Chaldean Numerology:
W O L F G A N G
6 7 3 8 3 1 5 3 Total: 36 -> 9
A M A D E U S
1 4 1 4 5 6 3 Total: 24 -> 6
M O Z A R T
4 7 7 1 2 4 Total: 25 -> 7
Mozart’s full name at birth in this case totals 9+6+7 = 22, which is a Master Number, also his Total Name Number. This number is called “The Builder” because of characteristics such as:
- Having great visions.
- Owning the motivation to take dreams and visions and transpose them into physical reality.
- Being charming, intelligent, and spiritually cultured, highly social and adept at connecting with ‘higher ups’ in an unobtrusive and humble way.
- Desiring to genuinely aid and connect with humanity at core level.
It’s really fascinating how both numerological systems, although at first seem to provide different results, actually converge to describe a genius who mastered complex forms by blending divine inspiration with mathematical precision to create a kind of music that have touched the universal human heart and also left an indelible legacy, a perfect embodiment of the dance between mystical inspiration (Chaldean 22) and earthly mastery (Pythagorean 8):
“Neither a lofty degree of intelligence nor imagination nor both together go to the making of genius. Love, love, love – that is the soul of genius.” (Mozart)
Johann Wolfgang Goethe, born on August 28, 1749
Day of Birth (DoB)
| Western Numerology | Chaldean Numerology | |
| Calculation | 28 | 28 -> 2+8 = 10 |
| Meaning | “You possess a gift for leadership, but it is employed best through cooperative effort. Your means are generally gentle persuasion, rather than overt displays of power. You are unconventional, idealistic, and independent. You are extremely ambitious. You possess much self-confidence, but need much encouragement …” | 2: “Pairs and Duality”: “… compromise … is the one of the challenges for the number 2 … the 2 … is generally known for its ability to see both sides of an issue, is a peaceful and generous energy and seeks romance, domesticity, and is not forceful or domineering …” 8: “Balance – Matter vs. Spirit”: ”… the 8 energy has at their disposal a vast amount of incredible power … but the main issue around these types of energies is control … the developed 8 holds the same intensity of regard for the material Earth plane as for the spiritual, unseen plane … the 8, while being one of the most powerful numbers in terms of achievements and so on, is also susceptible to complete and utter loss of balance …” 10: “The turning point”: “This indicates a returning to the beginning, but in a different way, on a different level … 10 indicates that at some point in the holder’s life, they will undergo a transformation or rebirth, and will often have the ability to create or do something unique that will become noticed by others and may well serve to assist humanity on either a large or small scale … ” |
Lifepath Number
| Western Numerology | Chaldean Numerology | |
| Calculation | Month: 8 Day: 28 -> 2+8 = 10 -> 1+0 = 1 Year: 1749 -> 1+7+4+9 = 21 -> 2+1 = 3 | Month: 8 Day: 28 |
| Lifepath Number | 8+1+3 = 12 -> 1+2 = 3 | 8+28 = 36 -> 3+6 = 9 |
| Some quoted meanings | “… you possess a great talent for creativity and self-expression. You are witty, possess a gift for gab, and savour the limelight … However, your artistic abilities can only be developed through discipline and commitment to the true development of your talent … You are optimistic, and you possess the resilience to overcome many setbacks … You are emotional and vulnerable …” | “Endings and Beginnings”: “The 9 is considered sacred, as it is the highest level of spiritual awareness attainable before reaching Master Numbers and is the end one set of lessons and the beginning of another. These rare people seem to understand this cycle and in the process of both releasing and anticipating …” |
Expression Number or Total Name Number
According to Pythagorean Numerology:
J O H A N N
1 6 8 1 5 5 26 -> 8
W O L F G A N G
5 6 3 6 7 1 5 7 40 -> 4
G O E T H E
7 6 5 2 8 5 33 (Master Number)
Goethe’s full name at birth totals 8+4+33 = 45. His Expression Number is 9 (reduced from 45). Some special features of the Expression Number 9 are:
- Being attracted to a cause or movement whose purpose is to make a better world through wisdom and creativity.
- Being highly idealistic and a visionary with the ability to influence and direct the masses.
- Often drawn to art, philosophy, education, spirituality.
- Deep emotional sensitivity and connection to the collective.
According to Chaldean Numerology:
J O H A N N
1 7 5 1 5 5 24 -> 6
W O L F G A N G
6 7 3 8 3 1 5 3 36 -> 9
G O E T H E
3 7 5 4 5 5 29 -> 11 (Master Number)
Goethe’s full name at birth in this case totals 6+9+11 = 26. His Total Name Number is 8 (reduced from 26), which is called “Balance – Matter vs. Spirit”. This number holds such features as:
- Having at their disposal a vast amount of incredible power and material mastery, worldly success.
- Having often to deal with control issue – the need to learn to use power wisely.
- Being generally rational, resourceful, organized, ambitious, but at the same time maybe unemotional.
- Being a true 8 is an “advertisement for positivity: spiritually awake and aware, loving and balanced, fair in all its dealings, wealthy yet humble, generous to a fault (without expecting anything in return), unassuming yet highly intelligent, a creative genius, an attentive and devoted and unselfish lover, friend, son, brother, or father, and a person we would all love to have as a political leader.”
Once again, we can see the unity in the seemingly difference between the two systems of numerology. Goethe, in his time and even nowadays, has proved himself to be an intellectual master: he was a poet, a novelist, a scientist, and also a statesman with his lifelong dedication to building a vast, cohesive body of work. He deeply considered how his ideas would impact future generations and was profoundly concerned with the evolution of human consciousness. He also had to face karmic challenges but overcame personal losses and political obstacles. Having either Master Number 11 or 33 in his name in the two systems really shows Goethe’s compassion and dedication to the humanity – by channelling universal wisdom into enduring works:
“A man sees in the world what he carries in his heart.” (Goethe)
In some following articles, I will further analyse Mozart and Goethe’s data combining The Tree of Life (Qabalah) and try to rebuild a ‘Life Development Map’ for each.
